LegCo Panel on Education visits schools operating in matchbox-style premises (with photos)
The Legislative Council ("LegCo") Panel on Education conducted a visit to three schools operating in matchbox-style sub-standard premises today (26 April). Members were able to obtain first-hand understanding of the environment of these schools and its impact on the quality of learning and teaching.
Accompanied by the Under Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin YEUNG, Members visited three primary schools in Kwai Chung, namely E.L.C.H.K. Kwai Shing Lutheran Primary School, S.R.B.C.E.P.S.A. Lee Yat Ngok Memorial School and C.N.E.C Ta Tung School. These schools were accommodated in cuboidal shaped school premises, also referred to as matchbox-style school premises, constructed in 1970s at public housing estates. These school premises are sub-standard as compared with newly built primary school premises and prevailing standards.
During the visit, Members visited the facilities of each school. They were briefed by school representatives on the difficulties faced by the school operating in sub-standard premises. These difficulties include the impact on the daily operation of the school as a result of frequent maintenance works on the aging and dilapidated school premises. Moreover, there are inadequate facilities for student activities. Members urge the Administration to explore ways to effectively improve the facilities of schools operating in matchbox-style premises and enhance their long-term development.
The LegCo Panel on Education will arrange a tripartite meeting with the Administration and representatives of the primary school sector to follow up issues related to matchbox-style school premises.
Members who participated in the visit are the Chairman of the Panel on Education, Dr Hon LAM Tai-fai, along with the Deputy Chairman, Hon IP Kin-yuen and Panel members, Hon LEUNG Yiu-chung, Hon TAM Yiu-chung, Hon WONG Kwok-hing, Hon LEUNG Kwok-hung and Hon Gary FAN Kwok-wai.
