LegCo Panel on Development visits Sha Tin Water Treatment Works (with photos)

The Legislative Council ("LegCo") Panel on Development conducted a site visit today (21 June) to the Sha Tin Water Treatment Works to better understand the water treatment and water quality monitoring processes of the Water Supplies Department ("WSD").

Accompanied by representatives of the Development Bureau and WSD, Members were briefed on the water treatment processes and the operation of the water quality monitoring systems.  Members learnt that the quality of water is closely monitored by means of chemical, bacteriological and biological examinations of water samples taken from treatment works and throughout the supply system.  They also expressed to the Administration that more information should be disseminated to the public about the water resources management measures in Hong Kong.

Members then observed the control room, water treatment facilities and laboratories at the water treatment works.  They took the opportunity to obtain more information on the procedures and technology to ensure that water samples complied with the Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality by the World Health Organization in respect of 92 water quality parameters, and other water quality targets.

Members who participated in the visit included Hon Tony TSE Wai-chuen, Chairman of the Panel; Dr Hon Helena WONG Pik-wan, who is a Panel member, as well as Hon Gary FAN Kwok-wai, who is a non-Panel member.
